Syncing Gmail Contacts with Blackberry Part two

Okay, I realized I never followed up on my Gmail contacts syncing with Blackberry issue from the other day.

I’m happy to tell you that it’s finally working. I didn’t do anything more special really after what I had already done.

I think the key things here are to remember the following:

  1. Back up your Blackberry contacts.
  2. Save them to your computer and import them into Gmail contacts via .csv file.
  3. Organize your Gmail contacts and clean up what is in the “My Contacts” section. Only keep things in there that you would want in your phone
  4. IMPORTANT: This is the only way I could get it to work without dozens of duplicates. DELETE your Blackberry address book through the Desktop Manager. Just do it. Make sure to see #1.
  5. Now Sync. I’m happy to report it syncs both ways.
  6. Sync again just to make sure it working correctly.

Things to keep in mind:

  1. I don’t think all bugs have been worked out. My first sync worked, and when it synced again, it put stuff in my phone that wasn’t even in My Contacts. However, after I cleaned it up again, it’s been fine since then.
  2. If you have more than one mobile number listed in Gmail Contacts, Blackberry won’t recognize it and will essentially just skip it. If you have an additional Mobile number, put it in as Other or whatever you can remember that it’s listed as.

I love the images Google News sometimes has to go along with their articles. Yes, I know it’s random based on titles and so forth, but it doesn’t make it any less funny.

Syncing Blackberry and Gmail Contacts

Follow up with steps to this post is here: Syncing Blackberry and Gmail Contacts Part Two

I complain all the time that there isn’t a decent online contact manager. I like Outlook fine, but it’s not online. At this point, I need something I can get on my home computer, work computer and on my blackberry. Basically web and phone access. Fortunately gmail has been doing some work to their contact manager. It still sucks as far as user interface, but it’s gotten better.

I tried syncing my gmail contacts to my blackberry a few weeks ago with the new syncing option they have. That was a pure disaster. I hit sync and then realized I shouldn’t have, as gmail imported hundreds of addresses into my phone, phone number or not. Now I have like four entries of everyone that was already there and random email addresses of people I hardly know.

Then gmail realized that wasn’t a great idea and let you only sync “My Contacts.” So the past few weeks I’ve been cleaning up “my contacts” so I can sync just the people that should be in my blackberry. Here goes the process.

11:20– Hook Blackberry to PC and run Desktop Manager. I rarely do this and it took me 7 minutes to figure out how to backup my current contacts to a cvs file. Backup is seemless.

Email break

11:45–I got through my gmail contacts again. I try to edit some and it keeps pulling up someone else’s data for the name I chose. Close gmail, try again.

11:52–It’s still doing it. With other contacts, showing the same person’s contact details but only when I click “edit.” In normal view, it’s fine.

12:02–I think it’s finally working correctly. Let’s finish up with My Contacts.

12:05–Still doing it. Going to clean my cache now.

12:20–Didn’t work. I’m done for now.

1:30–Cleaned up Gmail contacts. Not sure what problem was, but I’m ready to import from phone…probably will lead to more cleaning.

1:35–It did. Have to re-do everything.

2:50–Spent the last hour + fixing all my duplicate contacts in Gmail. Ready to syn I think. Prob will end up with duplicates in blackberry now. I am anticipating a mess *sigh*

3:07–It’s still syncing…

3:12–Still syncing, but it’s already added a bunch more duplicates to my Gmail Contacts…the ones I spent the last few hours fixing.

3:17–will fix in gmail again and see what happens upon re-sync. It wouldn’t be as painful if Gmail had a decent contact manager.

3:23–Deleting all BB contacts (they’re already backed up on PC and in gmail) to cut down on duplicates on next sync.

3:40–fixed gmail contacts AGAIN. Re-syncing now.

3:45–Eureka! (I think). I’m going to re-sync again, just to make sure on the next sync, it doesn’t dump all those duplicates back into gmail and blackberry. I made one change in gmail contacts and one change in blackberry to something else. We’ll see if it figures that i want both changes, or dumps one or both of them…

4:02–It screwed it up upon re-sync. I’m really not sure why.

4:16–still says “starting sync”…I think it’s tired of syncing.

Done for now, I’ll update with the results later.

Gmail Labs

I’m disappointed with the Gmail labs launched this week. I know this is just what Googlers do in their 20% time, but everything in the lab is nearly useless in function. I mean, who really needs a random signature? Sure it might be fun, but why not working on something like a Signature Picker to start with. The Quick Links could be useful, but Superstars, pictures in chat, custom date format, SNAKEY? Seriously? So, a few of this could be useful to a handful of people like the Quick Links and the Custom Keyboard Shortcuts (the only truly useful one I see on the list). Email Addict? Maybe, but geez, if you need your email program to tell you to take a 15 minute break, you have bigger issues that being addicted to email.

How about some of the following:

  • Signature Picker
  • Better Contact Manager
  • A folder option for all those people who keep screaming about it that can’t figure out labels
  • an option to not add every email you send to your address book
  • Sub-labels
  • message sorter
  • notes to yourself in messages
  • auto text

Just to name a few upgrades I’d like to see…

GodTube

GodTube Raises $30 Million

I think that is cool, but come on, trademarking “Jesus 2.0″ is just ridiculous. I don’t personally use it much because there is far more good content on YouTube, but if you don’t like searching through all the other stuff, then GodTube might be a good alternative.

Looks like a guy started a new video sharing site for Salvation Army people as well. SallyTube. Come on, can’t we get a little more creative with our website names? It doesn’t look to be official and I can’t help to wonder how The Salvation Army as a whole will feel about it, considering the dislike of Unsite. But I still would argue that, if done correctly, it shouldn’t be a bad thing for the SA.
