Google+ Plus Still Needs…

google plus

If you haven’t got yourself into Google+ yet, keep trying. I hear they are opening it up to anyone and then closing it off. So you’re best bet is to keep trying or if you want, I’ll send you something as way of an invitation and try to get you in that way.

So far, despite being a little lonely over there, I like it. The interface is nice, clean, non-obtrusive (yeah, I’m talking to you Facebook) and just feels natural. All that aside, there are a few things I think they need to address ASAP.

  1. Google Reader integration. Seriously, as of yet, there is no way to connect the two so that what I “share” in Google Reader shows up in G+. Why is that, Google? I’m sure something has to be in the works, but it seems weird. In fact, in Google Reader, I can’t even +1 something. It does show up on the profile under Buzz, but I don’t look there for other people’s buzzes, just what is in their stream. There doesn’t seem a way to share your Buzzes from G+ to your stream either. Just give us an option to post it to our stream from Reader.
  2. Gmail integration. There are a million ideas I have about how this should work, but I’ll start simple. Let me reply to messages/notifications I get in my email from G+. You can do it in Facebook. In fact, tie it in with my gmail account so that when I send a picture to someone not on G+ (or even someone that is), it looks like it’s coming from my email address. I have some other thoughts about that…you remember Wave? Yeah, something like that, just better and all inside G+. Don’t make me leave G+ for any reason actually.
The not-so-ASAP list:
  1. Events/Calendar. Let us create events and add things to our Google Calendar. Again, don’t make me leave G+ for anything.
  2. Docs. I could really see G+ being a great tool for the workplace…if you allow document sharing, etc…
  3. WordPress integration. Going with a non-Google item here. I know there are plans to integrate Blogger, but why? Everyone knows Blogger sucks. I am shocked it still exists. Keep it and integrate it for those blogs still hosted on it. We don’t want to lose page rank. But, give us other options like WordPress integration to start.
What else do you want to see done in G+? Are you using it?

Writing Tools: WordPress Mobile Apps

In keeping things brief in the previous post, I omitted one other major advantage to using WordPress for writing. The WordPress Mobile App for your iPhone, iPad or Android phone, and pretty much any other type of phone you have. Here is the list.

The app allows you to write, save and publish straight from your mobile device. You can edit posts, write new posts, give them categories and tags, set up a scheduled post, and even do some basic formatting such as bold, italics, strikeout, and include links and quotes. It’s obviously not as full featured as using on an actual computer, but it’s quite good. In fact, for a long time, I’ve said it’s one of the best developed apps out there for iPhone/iPod Touch or Android. It’s stable and just works like you’d expect it to. Here’s the best part: you can even take pictures or videos and upload them straight to your post, or just select them from your gallery. It’s great when you’re in a pinch and really feel compelled to writing something and maybe don’t have your computer available.   [Read more...]

Writing Tools: WordPress

Another tool I use for writing is WordPress. There is so much I could say about WordPress that could take me days or even weeks, but I’m going to attempt to keep this brief. WordPress is free software you can use to create a blog or even a website, but it so much more than that. Gone are the days of creating individual pages for your website. With WordPress, you can literally just begin writing. Don’t care about design? No problem. The WordPress default theme is easy enough on the eyes and you won’t even have to think about it. Care about design? You’re in luck. You can literally do anything you want design-wise in WordPress. That’s one of the best things. People with zero web design or web development knowlege and still make the most of the excellent service, while even the most advanced person can tweak and develop and design until their heart is content.

First, there are two different types of WordPress. Self-Hosted means you download it from WordPress.org or more likely, allow your web host to do a simple one-click install of it. You pay for your own hosting, but the software itself is free, and you have complete control over it. WordPress.com is not self-hosted, they host your blog for you. The advantage is that you won’t have to pay a dime if you don’t want to. They give you the server space. The downside is that if you want your own unique URL or want to do a few extra things to it, you may pay some low-cost fees. You have less freedom on WordPress.com, but it’s equally as powerful from a writing standpoint. My preference is self-hosted and if you have any technical knowledge or a friend who can help, that is the route I’d go, but if you’re not sure, start with the WordPress.com blog.   [Read more...]

Writing Tools: Evernote

Evernote

I mentioned in my last post that I’ve begun to intentionally set aside time to write something each day, or at least most days. One of the things I struggle with most is that I’ll have the greatest idea in the world, but forget it before I get in the mood to blog about it, or have lost whatever I was reading or seeing that sparked the idea to begin with. As such, I’ve started making use of some tools to help me with the process. One of the biggest helps to me is that I’ve started actually using Evernote. It’s kind of like an online notebook, but also so much more than that. You can jot down notes, ideas, quotes, recipes, or whatever. But you can also add links to web pages. Not just the web pages though, it’ll actually clip and insert the page so you don’t have to look for a link that may or may not be available anymore. Same goes for adding images, videos, attachments and audio recordings.

Here’s a real-life example I used recently. I was writing a food review of Schooners Bistro recently on my Monterey Insiders site. I jotted down some notes about the service, discreetly so that the server didn’t know I was actually judging him. For all he knew, I was texting someone. I also took a picture of my neighbor’s drink and attached it to the same file with the notes. As I was leaving to go to my car, I hit the audio record and added more voice reminders for myself. I did this all from my cell phone. When I got home, I pulled it up on my computer, went to that “note” about Schooners and had my notes, audio recording and picture all in once place. I actually waited until a few days later to write the review, but I still had all the ideas and thoughts that I was thinking the night I ate there, which would have been lost otherwise.   [Read more...]

Worm Compost Bin: Do-It-Yourself

Worm Bin Composting

A little over a month ago I decided I was going to start composting. I had been considering the idea for a while actually, but finally decided I was going to try it. After about a week of research, I figured the best bet for me would be worm composting. I looked at the tumblers (non-worm type) and figured if I had to remember to go and tumble this thing around, I may not do it and then I’d have a bin just full of food scraps that wasn’t composting at all. I even looked at the automatic composters you can keep under your sink, but they were rather expensive, so I passed on those as well and settled on worm composting.

To get started, I used tips from Red Worm Composting and from Garden Girl TV. Those links provide some videos with step-by-step instructions on getting started, and if you’re really into learning more about the worms, etc… the Red Worm Composting is a great site.

Here’s how I did it and what I used:

  • 2 Bins (I think they were either 10 or 14 Gallon, but you can see the size in the pictures) @ $7.50/each
  • Electric screwdriver or drill (if you don’t already have one, you could use a box cutter, knife, or something to puncture the plastic)
  • Shredded cardboard to get started
  • food scraps
  • red worms (I got some from a co-worker)
Worm Bin Supplies

Supplies needed (Click for larger image)

First. Drill some holes in the bottom of ONE of the bins. I drilled about 9 holes, but at this point, would suggest more holes. These holes will allow water to drain out of the inner bin into the outer bin so that you don’t have a swamp in the bottom of your inner bin.

Worm Bin Upper Bin

Holes in bottom of inner bin (Click for larger image)

Second. In the same bin you just drilled your holes, drill some holes in the top sides of the bins, all the way around. This allows your worms to have some air to breath. I drilled about 7 on each long side and about 2 on the short sides. I’d recommend at least that many. The only other suggestion to make is drill the holes high enough on the side so that when you put the inner bin into the outer bin, the holes do not get covered by the outer/bottom bin.

Worm Bin side holes

Third. Drill some holes in one of your lids. Again, this allows the worms to breath. I drilled about 13 holes here.

Fourth. Fill the bin you drilled the holes in with your shredded cardboard. This makes the bedding.

Fifth. Grab the outer bin (the one you haven’t drilled any holes in) and put a small box or ice cream containers in the bottom of it. This forces the top bin to sit on the box and not fall all the way down. This is important because if the bottom bin gets too much water in it, if the top bin isn’t far enough from the bottom, the water will come back up in the top bin. Keep in mind, with the water going through, unless you have something more sturdy than my waffle box, you’ll have to change it frequently.

Sixth. Add some food and yard waste (if you have some) on top of the bedding. You’ll see some orange peels in mine. You’ll generally only want to use citrus peelings in moderation (like I have).

That’s basically it! Put the lid on and you’re ready to go.

But, Where Are The Worms?

Good question. The folks over at Red Worm Composting suggest to let the food sit for a week or so (or longer) before adding the worms. This allows the food to begin to break down and makes it easier for the worms to get started on the composting. So unless you’ve had your food already collecting for a week or so, just wait it out. I waited about a week and a half on mine. A co-worker provided some worms from his compost bin.

Here are some other tips I’ve learned on my own or read along the way:

  • Chop the food up into small pieces. It makes it easier for the worms (I’m not great at doing this).
  • If you already have some compost, or access to some, put some in the bottom. My co-worker did this for mine when we put the worms in. He says it’s good for them to have that in there. I haven’t read that anywhere, but he’s been doing this longer than me and I figured it definitely wouldn’t hurt.
  • If you wondered why there is no dirt in there, it’s because red worms aren’t really deep soil dwelling worms. They don’t actually need it, but if you want to throw in a handful of soil (not a lot), it can help speed up the composting process.
  • Keep a good balance of greens (food scraps/yard waste) and browns (cardboard, paper towels, paper, etc…). That’s really the science behind making it work.
  • For every little bit of food layer I add, I add in some shredded paper to cover it up. This keeps the smell and flies away.
  • Keep it wet. Water it down every few days. One tip is to take the inner bin out (let it drain first), pick up the outer bin and pour the water (and any worms that may have fallen through your holes) back into the bin.
  • Don’t put any meats, fats or grease in it. It’ll make it smell and attract animals. You don’t want that.

I’m no expert by any means. I’ve probably even done a few things wrong here and there, but I’m learning along the way. It’s only been about a month since started and I’ve only had about 3 weeks with my worms, but I can tell it’s starting to break down. Hopefully in a few months, I’ll have some good compost to use in my tomato and cucumber plants.

Praying More Just In Case of Rapture?

judgement day

Admit it. You’ve prayed more this week haven’t you? Give more tithe last Sunday? Indulged on chocolate this week? Called your mother/grandmother/siblings? Cleaned incriminating evidence off your computer? Put off work until next week?

No? Oh, well then, me either. That would be crazy, right?

So, you probably have seen the news or billboard or heard people talking about Judgement Day/Rapture/End of the World/We’re All Going to Die this week. If not, here’s an article for your reading pleasure. In short, Harold Camping, the President of Family Radio and the guy who predicted Judgement Day for sometime in 1994, has said that now that date is 2011. In fact, it’s May 21, 2011 at 6pm (all time zones). I guess if New Zealand is safe in roughly 9 1/2 hours, then we should be okay. From what I gather, it starts there–an earthquake or something–and makes it way around the world so that it hits each place around 6pm local time. Like I said, I think I’ll just turn on the news around 11pm Pacific Time and if all is well in New Zealand, I’ll sleep soundly.

No, of course I don’t think the world will end tomorrow. Why? Because of this:

(Jesus speaking) “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”

-Mark 13:32

But all the same, I would love to take a big nation-wide poll of the above things. Are people praying more and repenting more this week? Was church attendance last week higher than normal? I think, even for me, in the back of my head, even though I’m confident in my faith and believe that Judgement Day isn’t happening tomorrow, there’s that small little voice of, What If? I mean, if so, I think it’ll just happen to be that day and not because Harold Camping was able to figure it out. Even so, I have a place in heaven, so I guess I don’t need to worry either way.

People think he’s crazy. People also probably though Noah was crazy for building an Ark. I can’t say 100% that I would have been totally on the Noah boat (literally). We have a tendency to laugh at people who get messages from God. I mean, unless it’s us or someone we know. Small messages seem to be okay, but big ones seem to make us call them crazy. I don’t think Mr. Camping has said he got a message from God though. I think he just thinks he’s smart enough to have figured God’s plan for Judgement Day out. You know, the one that Jesus himself said He didn’t even know, only God?

Then there is the fact that I have to answer questions from my teens like, “Ms. Melissa? Am I going to die on Saturday?” No, you’re not. At least not because of the world ending and I hope not for any other reason. And in the extremely unlikely case that it is Judgement Day, you’re not going to die. You’re going to be in heaven if you know Jesus, and I think you do. At least that that’s generally what I said. I’m pretty sure if he (the teen) throws in an extra few prayers this week, as he likely has, it won’t hurt anything. But why do we have to scare people into heaven? Fear is a terrible motivator. It works, but it’s terrible for getting people to do things for the right reasons. Sure, we should fear God, but out of reverence and not because of some man going around fear-mongering.

Either way, rapture or not, I’m going to be in heaven on Saturday. I’ll be at AT&T Park watching the Giants game. That’s about as close as you can get to heaven in the meantime.

Glee and the Downfall of Sue

Glee Season 2

Looking for Sue’s Eulogy? Had a lot of search results looking for it so I typed it up. It’s at the bottom of the post.

I’m curious as to what you all think on this. I’m wondering if last night’s episode of Glee, titled “Funeral” may have been a changing point for Glee. Now, before I continue on, if you haven’t seen last night’s episode of Glee (May 17, 2011), you may want to skip this post until after you watch it.

You’ve been properly warned.

Seriously, don’t get mad at me if you keep reading.

Okay, we should be good now. I debated putting in one of those long, vertical SPOILER SPACE things like they do on message boards and stuff, but you guys are grownups, probably.

So last night Sue’s sister died on the show. I know she wasn’t a main character or anything, but it still affected the show because of the impact that she, and especially her death, created on Sue. I was actually upset by her dying because she brings so much more depth to Sue and is perhaps the only character on the show that is truly “good”. However, it was a very well done, touching episode. The Glee kids helped Sue plan a funeral, and it was Willy Wonka awesome. It was interesting that Sue was worried no one would show up for her sister’s funeral, and they did. But in the moment of the funeral, Sue only had the Glee cast there. Will had to finish reading her eulogy. Will, whom she hates. Turns out her sister wasn’t the one without friends, but it was Sue (that wasn’t discussed or brought up on the show, I just thought about it after the fact). In the end of the episode Sue apologizes to Will for how she’s treated him and the Glee kids and “oh, I also re-routed your plane going to Nationals to Libya instead.” But she was sorry about it. No worries, Will’s ex-wife Terri stepped in with plane tickets for all of them, told Will she was moving to Miami for a promotion and saved the day. That is where we are now.

Here’s where I want input and am wondering if this is a turning moment for the show. My fiancee and I have been talking about how Season 2 has seen much less Sue than Season 1, or so it seems anyway. And when we do see Sue, it’s been a toned down Sue. Not the snarky, mean, bully of Season 1. I loved that Sue, but I also am old enough to realize the satire in it.  Don’t get me wrong. Sue has done some terribly mean things in Season 2, but it seems like she’s been less of the central character that Season 1 sort of became about.

I also noticed, while re-watching Season 1 with my teen group, that they don’t get the satire behind Sue’s hatefulness. They can’t stand her and I’m like, “What? She’s awesome.” And they look at me like I’m Sue. Then I try to explain to them satire and irony and things like that and they look at me like I’m speaking Hindu or tell me I’m using “big words.”

I told Alex that I think maybe that less of Sue needed to happen. I mean, in the past coupe of years, bullying has become a hot topic. It’s even been addressed on Glee, so we know they are aware of the seriousness of it. Our theory is somewhere along the lines of keeping Sue true to her character, but not making the show about her (I’m sure it was never intended to be anyway, but Jane Lynch is amazing). It’s kind of like maybe they thought, “let’s not glorify Sue and her bullying.” Even though throughout both seasons her master plan is usually always thwarted by the end of the episode, but it got to be fun to watch her torture these poor kids.

So my question lies here. Do you think that Sue’s promise to stop bullying Glee will hold up in Season 3 (or even the season finale of Season 2 for that matter)? Would Glee work with an only a mildly antagonistic Sue? Do you agree that the “toned-down” Sue is possibly a response the the Anti-Bullying movement, or are we crazy in thinking she’s toned down at all? Actually, I think we’ve just seen less of her antagonism, not so much that it’s toned-down. Maybe if anything, it’s been more overtly crazy to drive home the point. I mean, shooting Britney out of a cannon, really? Just less Sue. I personally think Sue’s sister dying could propel her into a bit more goodness (while keeping her snarkiness and probably other people to bug) and give us more Sue at the same time. It may be interesting to see Sue with a season of not being a bully.

Looking for Sue’s Eulogy? Here it is. (Seemed to have a lot of search results today looking for it)

I miss my sister. Every night at 10 or so she used to call me on the phone and when i asked her why, she’d tell me that her body told her. She wanted to hear my voice.

I miss my sister. The smell of her shampoo. The way she could always convince me to read her another book. When you love someone, like I loved her, they’re a part of you. It’s like you’re attached by this invisible tether and not matter how far away you are, you can always feel them.

And now every time I reach for that tether, I know there is no one on the other end and I feel like I’m falling into nothingness. Then I remember Jean. I remember a life led with no enemies, no resentments, no regrets, and I’m inspired to get up out of bed and go on.

I miss my sister so much. It feels like a piece of me has been ripped off. Just one more time I wanna hold her. Ten more seconds, is that too much to ask? For ten more seconds to hold her? But I can’t. And I won’t. And the only thing keeping me from being swallowed whole by sadness is that Jean would kill me if I did. So for now, I’m just gonna miss her. I love you Jeannie. Rest in peace.

Peanut Butter Bacon Cookies

Peanut Butter Bacon Cookies
Bacon makes everything better!

You read that right. Peanut Butter Bacon Cookies.

Think that sounds disgusting? Well, perhaps you’d like this site better. At any rate, these were delicious! They’re not overly bacon-y, but just enough to blend with the peanut butter to have a nice mix of sweet and salty. You know what else? They aren’t made with flour, so that makes them gluten free. Yeah, I don’t care about that stuff. I love gluten and wheat and all that yummy goodness, but, if you happen to have that gluten intolerance (or pretend you have it to be trendy), then you can still eat these cookies. No excuses. I even got one of my vegetarian friends to try a bite and she liked it!

How can you make some of these yummy treats? Well unless you have an awesome friend like I did to make them for you, the recipe is below and courtesy of Shutterbean. Keep in mind, without the flour, they may turn out a bit crumbly–ours did anyway.

Peanut Butter Bacon Cookies

(Recipe via JoytheBaker who adapted from The Gourmet Cookbook)Makes about 24 cookies

  • 1 cup all-natural chunky or smooth peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • about 6 slices of bacon, cooked, cooled and diced

In a skillet over medium high heat, fry up bacon until cooked through and let cool on paper towels until cool enough to dice. Dice up and set aside.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment & set aside. In a mixer combine peanut butter and sugars until well combined, about 2 minutes. Add egg and baking soda and mix for another 2 minutes. Fold in cooked bacon. Roll into large walnut sized balls and create a criss-cross pattern with a fork. If you’d like, roll the dough balls in granulated sugar before making the criss-cross pattern. Bake for 10 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool on a baking sheet for five minutes, then transfer to… your mouth.

There you have it. The best stuff I’ve eaten in a long time. In fact, I think I’ll go have one right now.

Celebrating Death, Justice or Just Closure?

osama bin laden is dead

I’ve been getting a bit frustrated with some comments and judgement being  thrown out in the wake of the announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden. I’ve seen a lot of posts from the Christian (and non-Christian) community about it not being right that we are celebrating the death of an individual. There are a ton of Bible verses both ways that people have thrown out. I won’t do that now. Let me be clear off the bat though: I don’t believe death should ever be celebrated. [Read more...]

Who Was The Real Prodigal?

prodigal

[This was a sermon I did at church I think last spring sometime. It was while writing this that I actually came across the book called Prodigal God by Timothy Keller, but I just got around to reading it last month. It's a really good book--definitely worth a read. At any rate, it was good to see I wasn't totally off track with my thinking here either.]

When I was about 11 years old I decided to run away from home. See, I just had this terrible life. My parents had the nerve to make me do chores like wash the dishes. I had to share my video games with my little brother. But the worst offense, the one that pushed me over was that was I had to go on vacation every summer to Florida for one whole month! Can you imagine how terrible that would be? Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Key West, Everglades, Daytona Beach, Miami. It was terrible. The only people I had to talk to for an entire month was my family! I got pretty good at making new friends quickly, but it was just torture. And of course, as fair skinned as I am, I’d always burn the first day of vacation, peel and then look like a freak the remainder of the trip.

So that was it. I had enough and I set off on a hot July day to leave home. I packed up some clothes and money and headed down the road. I made it about as far as the others side of the gate from my house…after all, it was pretty hot out, and I’ve already told you–I burn easily. I decided I could probably tolerate life with my family a little longer. [Read more...]
