Bad bad break-up

King James

So, some guy named LeBron James (you may have heard of him *sarcasm*) announced he was leaving his NBA basketball team, the Cleveland Caveliers, after seven years. He’s moving on the the Miami Heat for what looks to be the Yankees of professional basketball in the next coming years.

The guy is 25 years old. He gave the last seven years of his life to the Cavs. He didn’t win a championship there either, and honestly, I couldn’t tell you one other person on the Cavs team, but I don’t keep up with NBA too much. The point is that in today’s world, seven years is a lot. Gen X-ers and Gen Y’s don’t stay at their jobs for life like previous generations do. And that’s what this was – a job. Granted, it was a job doing what he loves, but it is still professional basketball is still his career. One would think he should be allowed the same opportunities as the rest of us in the workforce. Did I mention he’s only 25? [Read more...]

God Hates Santa?

I opened Twitter this morning to see this hanging out on top of the page. When I read it I wasn’t paying attention to who wrote it. In fact, for a few minutes I thought it was written by my friend Roger who is good at pointing out God’s love to us, and who had a tweet under this one. I saw his picture and assumed he wrote it. Then a couple minutes later I looked again because I was going to reply to him. That’s when I saw that it wasn’t Roger who wrote it. It was none other than Kevin Smith. Yep, That Kevin Smith. I don’t know much about his faith, but I will say,  I really didn’t expect to hear spiritual truths about who God loves this morning from the guy Silent Bob–whether it was intended or not.

But I’m glad I did. I just wish more people understood God’s love and not God’s hate.

3 Idiots

3 Idiots was a great movie. I saw it last week and loved it. Granted I was there with the only “3 idiots” in line that weren’t Indian and were even asked if we thought we were in line for Avatar, but it was still a great time. It’s supposed to be the first movie legally released via YouTube, which should happen in about 3 months.

Don’t let the preview fool you. While it is very funny (too bad there aren’t subtitles in the preview–there are in the movie) and extremely silly at times (a few Indian songs in the middle), there are moments it is very sad and sobering.

I highly recommend you check it out either in the theater if it’s near you or when it comes out on YouTube.

My Top Albums

I was thinking the other day about my favorite and/or most influential albums, so I decided to make a list of the Top 10. This isn’t a past decade list, just in my lifetime for me personally, which would give us from about mid-80s or so through present day, in no particular order.

  1. Jagged Little Pill-Alanis Morissette. This is the one that inspired me to make the list. I was listening and realized how many of her songs influenced pop culture. Anyone my age probably knows the bitter chick line, “I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner.”  They will also add the emphasis to dinner. It also was about the only thing I could listen to that would tick my parents off, so it worked for my teenage years. But Ironic, Head Over Feet, Hand in My Pocket, You Learn…were all great songs…from one album. The rest of it is pretty good too.
  2. Stunt-Barenaked Ladies. This may be my favorite CD of all-time. One Week is my absolute favorite song, but I can listen to the entire album straight through without skipping. Call & Answer, Never is Enough, etc…good stuff.
  3. August and Everything After-Counting Crows. My Dad actually got this for me. It was then I realized he actually had pretty good music taste and gave us at least one thing we could agree on when I was a teenager.
  4. Continuum-John Mayer. Love him or hate him, he can play guitar and it doesn’t come much better than every single track on Continuum.
  5. Songs You Know by Heart-Jimmy Buffett. ’nuff said.
  6. Songs from an American Movie, Vol. I-Everclear. I just like it. And it’s the home to a top 3 song of mine, Wonderful.
  7. Everything Aerosmith. Choosing one was too hard. I probably listened to Nine Lives the most, but you can’t ignore some of the earlier classics.
  8. Forgot to Breath-The Muckrakers.
  9. Confessions-Usher. Yep. I confess. I actually only ended up with this after my car was stolen. The thieves left it in there and thus began my untouchable PS2 Karaoke version of Burn.
  10. Nevermind-Nirvana. What can I say…I was angry in the 90s.

I’m sure I left off something obvious, but that’s what I got for now. There would be a lot more honorable mentions if I wasn’t trying to look at the entire album.

How about you? What are yours?

I Am Tiger Woods

tiger-woodsTiger Woods. I’ve read the news. I’ve watched the interviews with his alleged mistresses. I’ve heard the jokes (some pretty funny ones I might add). I wouldn’t say I’ve been following the story, but in general, I’m pretty up-to-date on current events as I read Google News and my feed reader several times a day. You would pretty much have to be living under a rock to not know that something bad was going on with Tiger.

Here’s the thing though. I know that I should be disgusted by his behavior. I should think he’s a total scumbag. And I do think that his behavior was disgusting. It makes me sad for him, his wife, his kids and everyone around him who is having to deal with the consequences of his choices. However, I don’t feel the outrage that everyone else seems to be having or even that I think I should have.

Part of that is that I don’t think what he did was so abnormal for a sports celebrity (especially at his level). I think he’s getting more heat because we’ve always seen him as a “good guy” and because he’s managed to protect his privacy more than any other sports star that I know.

But the other reason is this: We all have a Tiger Woods in us.

RIP MJ

Pretty good article. It’s also short so give it a read and watch the video included.

I regret not ever seeing him in concert.

Britain’s Got Talent

I’ve been sitting here watching clips from Britain’s Got Talent this morning. They had the first semi-final round this weekend and of course Susan Boyle made it through to the finals. There was a couple of things that struck me though about this show compared to American Idol.

First, this show goes by much quicker than American Idol. It’s like they audition, a few nights of semi-finals for different groups, where you find out that night if you are in the finals, and then they have the finals. American Idol just drags on and on. Weeks of auditions. Weeks of singing and eliminating. Performance shows and then results shows. It’s ridiculous. I realize it’s all about advertising and making money, but it’s the reason I can’t watch it. It’s just too long.

Second, the demeanor of the show and overall attitude just seems more positive. Now, I’ve not watched it a lot. In fact, before Susan Boyle, I didn’t realize it was even still on the air. But just watching that video, and other audition videos and seeing Simon and the rest of the crew smiling like they were, just made me want to watch more. I’m sure they have bad auditions, but that is the thing…unlike American Idol, where they make shows or clips out of just bad auditions and drama-filled people, I haven’t seen it on Britain’s Got Talent. I’m not saying they don’t do it, but it just obviously isn’t as popular when they do it. Americans just seem to thrive on others’ failures, while the folks on the British show seem to want their people to succeed and even the judges do.

Maybe it’s just me and I haven’t seen enough of the show to see the bad sides of it. I just know that based on what I have seen, I’d much rather watch Britain’s Got Talent any day of the week.
